Ah, ah, ah, ah
Ah, ah, ah, ah

We come from the land
Of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun
Where the hot springs blow

“Hey Johnny!”
“Welcome to Nowhere Gus!”

“It’s a snowy Nowhere Reb: very Northern of you.”

“It does suggest that doesn’t it.”

“You said we’d Nowhere rally for our Virginia trip.”

“Right.”

“So Robert E. Lee was indicted for treason?”

“He was,” Reb stated, “by a federal court in Norfolk, 7 June 1865."

"Just Lee?"

"And many others.”

“They hung John Brown for treason.”

PictureNowhere Snow
"In 1859,” Reb added, “for state treason, against Virginia: not federal treason.”

“And Lee’s was against the Union, the Republic?”

“It was.”

“That was like indicting the number one Johnny Reb.”

“Our General.”

“General Johnny Reb then.”

“Fair enough.”

“What happened?”

“Lee wrote to Grant, General Grant.”

“That was noble of Lee.”

“How so?”

“Reaching out to a former adversary,” Gus noted, “it’s a sign of greater value than himself; in doing so, Lee was supporting the Republic, and that was noble.”

“They might have hung him.”

“If so they wouldn’t have stopped there; the idea was to let the South up easy, right?”

PictureNowhere Berries
“Lincoln.”

“Lee and Grant saw the carnage," followed Gus, "and, like us, participated in it.”

“They did.”

"Then no back-drifting."

"Correct."

“Lee was great Johnny.”

“Just …”

“Just that it seems he got off track,” Gus lighted, “and found a way back.”

“Back to the Union.”

“Right,” Gus echoed, “back to what his father built.”

“Our Constitution.”

“What’s in Virginia?” Gus asked, “you know, where we going?”

“Lots in a name Yank.”

“We’ll find out, huh?”

“In June.”

“‘Lots in a name’ you say …”

“Time Yank ...”

PictureNowhere Snowberries

“Okay,” followed Gus, “and I’ll Nowhere fade today: gonna skirmish me some snowberries.”

“They’re in season.”

“See ya in Virginia Reb!”
“See ya in Virginia Gus!”

PictureTuscarora Nation: A Collage

Aborigine Hemp Gatherers

Divide and conquer …

1710: The Tuscarora inhabited parts of the colonies of North Carolina and Virginia. They sent emissaries to Pennsylvania seeking peace. Petitioned complaints included: inability to fetch food and water, safety for their families, and the constant fear of being sold into slavery.

1711: War begins when hostile Tuscarora (allied with the Coree) kill about 70 colonists in North Carolina, wound many others, and destroy property.

1712: The English governor of New York, in writing to his superior, the Lords of Trade, worried that the Tuscarora War was likely to embroil all the colonies. He expressed concern about the French inciting the Five Nations to fulfill their threat to join the Tuscarora.

PictureThe colony of North Carolina
1713: With military aid from South Carolina, 33 white men and 900-allied aborigine, the colony of North Carolina is able to defeat the hostile Tuscarora. In a four-day siege the Tuscarora are decimated at Fort Nooherooka; most survivors seek shelter in the colonies of Virginia and New York.

1714: The leaders of the Five Nations inform the English governor of New York that the Tuscarora have come to shelter themselves with the Five Nations. The aborigine leaders tell the King’s governor that the Tuscarora: “were of us and went from us long ago, and now are returned and promise to live peaceably among us.”

1715: Seventy of the hostile Tuscarora go to the colony of South Carolina to assist against another aborigine people, the Yamasee. Later these Tuscarora asked and received permission to settle their families in South Carolina.

The historic Tuscarora Nation acknowledges three tribes: one of them, the Skarun’ren’, are the Hemp Gatherers.

Heal Union: John Sigismund, Bob Marley and 400 Years

The Heal Union spring series continues with FOXTROT.
PictureHouse of Hohenzollern, John Sigismund (1572-1619)

400 years, 400 years, 400 years
Of the same philosophy
400 years, 400 years, 400 years
And the people, they still can't see

Four hundred years ago John Sigismund, Elector of Brandenburg and from the House of Hohenzollern, held one of the electoral votes used to select the Holy Roman Emperor. His leadership participated in the years leading up to the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). The last ruling Hohenzollern, Emperor Wilhelm II, precipitated World War I in 1914; by May 1915, the House of Hohenzollern was in deep doo-doo:

May 7, 1915 - A German U-Boat torpedoes the British passenger liner Lusitania off the Irish coast. It sinks in 18 minutes, drowning 1,201 persons, including 128 Americans. President Woodrow Wilson subsequently sends four diplomatic protests to Germany.

May 9, 1915 - Following six days of artillery bombardment by over a thousand French guns, the French 10th Army attacks German defense lines in the Artois, advancing toward Vimy Ridge. The French achieve their initial objective, but fail to capitalize on the narrow breach they create in the German lines. The next day, Germans counter-attack and push back the French.

PictureHouse of Hohenzollern, Emperor Wilhelm II (1905)
May 9, 1915 - Complementing the French offensive at Vimy, British and Indian troops launch their second attack against the Germans around Neuve Chapelle in the Artois. However, without sufficient artillery support to weaken the German frontline defenses, the advancing soldiers are decimated by German machine-gun fire. The attack is called off the next day with 11,000 casualties.

May 15, 1915 - British and Indian troops launch another attack against Germans in the Artois, this time at Festubert, north of Neuve Chapelle. The attack is preceded by a 60-hour artillery bombardment. But the troops advance just 1,000 yards while suffering 16,000 casualties.

May 23, 1915 - Italy enters the war on the side of the Allies by declaring war on Austria-Hungary. The Italians then launch offensives along the 400-mile common border between Austria and Italy. The better-equipped Austrians take advantage of the mountainous terrain to establish strong defensive positions all along the border. The Italians then focus their attacks on the mountain passes at Trentino and the valley of the Isonzo River.

May 31, 1915 - The first aerial bombing of London occurs as German Zeppelins kill 28 persons.

In 1919 the so-called peace and powers that be left Germany a weak republic; it was weak because it didn’t represent We the People – it only counted (represented) states. To follow the money, here’s a link to who funded Hitler in 1933 as he muscled the Weimar Republic into a dictatorship: Who Financed Adolf Hitler?

In Europe, World War II ended 70 years ago today.

Fools don't see, fools don't see, fools don't see
But I know the weak keep strong
So, come with me to a land of liberty
Oh darlin', where we can live a life and be free
